What Fathers Need to Hear This Father’s Day
Inspired by Dr. Watson’s open letter to fathers shared through Fathers.com several years ago, I wanted to revisit this message as Father’s Day approaches—because the heart behind it still feels just as relevant today.
A few words of encouragement for the dads who quietly carry more than most people realize.
Fatherhood comes with an incredible weight.
The responsibility to: Provide.
Protect.
Lead well.
Stay strong for the people you love.
And if we’re honest, many fathers walk around carrying the pressure of all those expectations while wondering privately if they’re really doing enough.
Most men don’t talk about that out loud.
It’s often easier to stay busy, stay distracted, or push past the discomfort than to admit how overwhelming fatherhood can sometimes feel. But underneath the surface, many dads wrestle with the same questions:
Am I leading my family well?
Am I emotionally present enough?
What if I don’t have what it takes?
If you’ve ever felt that tension, you’re not alone.
In fact, many fathers feel deeply inadequate when it comes to relationships—especially when the people they love most are asking for more connection, more communication, or more emotional presence. And when those moments happen, it can feel easier to withdraw than to risk feeling like you’ve failed.
But Dad, you were not created to retreat from the people who need you most.
You were made for courage.
Not perfection.
OR performance.
Not pretending to have it all together.
Real courage looks like staying present.
Listening when it’s uncomfortable.
Trying again after getting it wrong.
Choosing connection instead of shutting down.
The strongest fathers are not the ones who never struggle. They are the ones willing to keep showing up with humility, honesty, and love.
Your family does not need a flawless man.
They need a faithful one.
And even when you feel uncertain, your presence matters more than you know.
So this Father’s Day, don’t underestimate the value of your steady love, your effort, your prayers, your protection, your consistency, or your willingness to keep growing.
The fact that you care enough to wonder if you’re doing it right already says something important about your heart.
Keep leaning in.
Pursuing the people you love.
And becoming the man God created you to be.
What you do matters.
And so do you.
