Is Living Together Before Marriage a Wise Decision?
It’s a question more and more Christian couples are asking.
Housing costs are high. Rent isn’t getting any cheaper. Living together can seem like a practical solution.
“We’ll save money.”
“We’ll spend more time together.”
“We’re committed to each other anyway.”
On the surface, it sounds reasonable.
But before making a decision based on convenience, it’s worth asking a different question:
Does this choice move us closer to God’s design for our relationship?
More Than Sharing an Address
When Scripture encourages us to flee temptation (1 Corinthians 6:18) and avoid situations that make sin easier (Romans 13:14), God isn’t trying to keep us from happiness.
He’s protecting something valuable.
Living together creates a level of emotional, relational, and often physical intimacy that was designed to grow within the safety of a lifelong covenant.
Even if a couple sincerely intends to remain sexually pure, sharing a home makes maintaining healthy boundaries far more difficult. Beyond that, it communicates a message to others that may not reflect the testimony believers are called to uphold.
As followers of Christ, our decisions aren’t based only on what we can do.
They’re based on what best honors Him.
Convenience Isn’t the Best Foundation
One of the greatest dangers of cohabitation isn’t simply the temptation it creates.
It’s that convenience can quietly replace intentional commitment.
